Tasmania Distillery

Jag har fått en intervju med Nathan Campbell, Sales and Marketing Assistant på Tasmania Distillery. Först kommer originalintervjun på engelska, och i slutet finns en svensk översättning.

Tasmania Distillery is located near Hobart, Tasmania, an island and a state of Australia located south of Melbourne. In Hobart, the island's largest city and state capital lives about 210 000 of the island's 515 000 (sep. 2014) inhabitants.

I got an interview with Nathan Campbell, Sales and Marketing Assistant på Tasmania Distillery.

Nathan, please tell my readers who you are & how you got involved in the whisky industry?
Tasmania Distillery was started in 1994. The early years were quite tough as traditionally Australia hasn't had a great culture or tradition of whisky drinking as other countries have. We relied on export markets primarily to get in to markets and make sales.

How would you define the Sullivans Cove style?
Tasmanian whisky in general is rich, oily and mouth filling. This is mainly because of two reasons, the old style methods by which we distill our whisky and also the fact we are using brewers barley as opposed to distillers barley. Brewers barley is grown specifically to contribute to the body and richness of beer, that translates into our Single Malt Whisky.

What is it that make Sullivans Cove whisky special in your opinion?
Every single release first must pass a tasting and appraisal process, before it is released. It is the staff that choose what makes the cut and what doesn't, so there is no compromising on quality.

Have you tried any whisky from Sweden? If so, what did you think of it?
Patrick Maguire, the Director and Head Distiller, has been to Sweden many times. Mackmyra is one distillery in particular that comes to mind.

What is the favourite moment in your whisky career?
It's hard to go past winning the WWA14 'Worlds Best Single Malt'.

Which three people would you invite for a whisky tasting, and why? (alive or dead)
It´s gonna be two then, the late Governor John Franklin (1786-1847) & his wife Lady Jane (1791-1875), who together were responsible for the 150+ years of prohibition that outlawed distillation in Tasmania, that was only lifted in 1991. Just so they could see how well the industry has bounced back!

Finally, do you have any advice concerning whisky to share with my reader?
Experimentation is the key, and also the fun part about drinking whisky. Always be open to trying something new and having your ideas challenged.

Nathan, berätta för mina läsare vem du är och hur du blev involverad i whiskyindustrin?
Tasmania Distillery startades 1994. De första åren var ganska tuffa eftersom Australien traditionellt sett inte har haft en särskilt stor kultur eller tradition av whiskydrickande som andra länder har. Vi litade på exportmarknaderna i första hand för att komma in på marknaden och kunna marknadsföra och sälja whisky.

Hur skulle du definiera Sullivans Cove´s stil?
Tasmanianwhisky i allmänhet är rik, fet och fyllig. Detta beror främst på två saker, dels tack vare den gamla stilen av metoder som vi använder oss av när vi destillerar vår whisky och dessutom det faktum att vi använder bryggeriernas korn. Bryggeriernas korn odlas speciellt för att bidra till kroppen och rikedomen i öl, som vi sedan "överför" till vår single malt whisky.

Vad är det som gör Sullivans Cove´s whisky speciell enligt din uppfattning?
Varje enskilt släpp måste först passera en provsmakning och noggrann bedömningsprocess, innan det släpps. Det är personalen som avgör om det är bra nog. Med andra ord, det kompromissas inte med kvaliteten. Bara det bästa är gott nog.

Har du provat någon whisky från Sverige? Om så är fallet, vad tyckte du om den?
Patrick Maguire, direktör och destillerichef, har varit i Sverige många gånger, och Mackmyra är framförallt det destilleri som jag kommer att tänka på.

Vilket är ditt mest minnesvärda ögonblick i din whiskykarriär?
Det är naturligtvis när vi vann WWA14 "Worlds Best Single Malt" (för Sullivans Cove French Oak Cask).

Vilka tre personer skulle du bjuda in till en whiskyprovning, och varför? (levande eller döda).
Det får bli två stycken då, guvernör John Franklin (1786-1847) och hans hustru Lady Jane (1791-1875), som tillsammans svarade för drygt 150 år av förbud mot destillation i Tasmanien, ända fram till 1991. Bara så att de kunde se hur väl branschen har studsat tillbaka!

Slutligen, har du några råd om whisky som du skulle vilja delge mina läsare?
Experimenterande är nyckeln, och även den roligaste delen när det gäller whisky. Att alltid vara öppen för att prova något nytt och att utmana dina sinnen.
