Jag har fått en intervju med Keith Batt, grundare och General Manager på Nant Distilling Company. Först kommer originalintervjun på engelska, och i slutet finns en svensk översättning.

Nant Distilling Company is located in Bothwell, Tasmania, Australia. Nant is the only Highland Single Malt Whisky in Australia. It was purchased by the Batt family in 2004, and began commercial production in 2008. In 2012 Nant Single Malt Whisky was catapulted to global renown when Jim Murray, the world's foremost whisky commentator, scored Nant Single Malt Whisky - American Oak Bourbon Wood 95.5 out of 100. This rarest of scores saw Nant rated among the top 50 whiskies in the world.

I got an interview with Keith Batt, founder and General Manager at Nant Distilling Company.

How did you get involved in the whisky industry?
I was looking to buy a property in Tasmania, Australia's southern island state, and spotted a run-down historic home on the internet. It only took one visit to fall in love with Nant Estate and its beautiful farmland. From there, a chance conversation inspired me to use the estate's crystal clear stream water and locally grown brewer's barley to try my hand at distilling. Four years later we released the first bottles of Nant highland whisky.

How would you define the Nant style?
From the very beginning, quality was our focus. We wanted to produce a smooth yet complex whisky that people would love and remember. That hasn't changed. We use the finest ingredients, in one of the cleanest environments in the world. The process of crafting Nant whisky is very personal and we take pride in every drop. 

The wood is 50 per cent of the flavour profile and we like to experiment with a range of casks, in fact we're the only Australian whisky distiller using White Oak barrels. Everyone has a different whisky preference, so we do whisky matured in barrels as diverse as American oak bourbon, French oak sherry and pinot noir which gives us a really broad expression to accommodate a good range of whisky drinkers.

Also, we don't strip the oil from Nant whisky so it remains easy drinking, and we purposefully target a very narrow flavour profile which is sweet, creamy and oily.

What is it that makes Nant whisky special in your opinion?
It's all about the highest quality local ingredients and our highland location. We use barley grown on our Tasmanian estate and water from a nearby glacial lake.The barley is ground on site, with a convict-built water-driven mill - you don't get fresher than that!

Have you tried any whisky from Sweden? If so, what did you think of it?
Nant whisky bars in Australia and Kuala Lumpur stock whiskies from around the world; I haven't yet tried a Swedish whisky but I'm on the hunt for one now!

What is the favourite moment in your whisky career?
I had the privilege of hosting whisky authority Jim Murray at Nant estate when our American Oak bourbon single malt whisky was award 'Liquid Gold' status.That was fun and memorable!

Perhaps the most exciting time is now. Nant is going from strength-to- strength, tripling our whisky production, opening new bars and a hotel, and growing Angus beef cattle.

Which three people would you invite for a whisky tasting, and why? (alive or dead).
Ava Gardner
- She famously said "I'd like to die when I'm 150, with a cigarette in my hand and a glass of whisky in the other," which has always made me smile. She also grew up in one of the most interesting periods of modern history and I'd love to sit down and shoot the breeze with her.

Sean Connery
- He's one of the most enduring icons of style and "cool," who wouldn't want to have a drink with 007? Plus, he's Scottish, so he'd probably know his way around a whisky or two.

Winston Churchill
- Again, he lived through some of the most interesting periods of the 20 th century, and he loved his whisky and cigars. Although he could be a bit of a cranky bugger, his wit was legendary.

Finally, do you have any advice concerning whisky to share with my readers?
Keep an open mind and try something new.

Hur blev du involverad i whiskyindustrin?
Jag var ute efter att köpa egendom i Tasmanien, Australiens södra delstat och såg ett slitet historiskt hem på internet. Det krävde bara ett besök för att tjusas av Nant Estate och dess vackra åkermark. Efter det var det ett slumpartat samtal som inspirerade mig att använda gårdens kristallklara källvatten och lokalt odlad korn för att jag skulle prova på destillering. Fyra år senare släppte vi våra första flaskor med Nant Highland Whisky.

Hur skulle du definiera Nant´s stil?
Redan från första början har kvalitet varit vårt fokus. Vi ville producera en len men ändå komplex whisky som folk skulle älska och minnas. Det har inte ändrats. Vi använder de finaste ingredienserna, i en av världens renaste miljöer. Processen som krävs för att skapa Nant whisky är väldigt personlig och vi har en stolthet i varje droppe. Träet är 50 procent av smakprofilen och vi gillar att experimentera med ett stort antal olika fat, faktum är att vi är den enda australiensiska whiskytillverkaren som använder vitektunnor. Alla har olika smak vad gäller whisky, därför gör vi whisky lagrad i tunnor som är lika olika såsom American oak bourbon, French oak sherry och Pinot Noir som ger oss ett väldigt brett smakuttryck för att tilltala flera olika whiskydrickare.

Utöver detta så försöker vi att behålla oljigheten i whiskyn, och vi har med mening en väldigt snäv smakprofil som är söt, krämig och just oljig.

Vad är det som gör er whisky speciell enligt din uppfattning?
Allt handlar om de av högsta kvalitet lokalt odlade ingredienserna och vårt höglandsläge. Vi använder korn odlat på vår Tasmanska gård och vatten från en närliggande glaciärsjö. Kornet mals på plats, med en av fångar byggd vattendriven kvarn- du kan inte få det färskare än så!

Har du provat någon whisky från Sverige? Om så är fallet, vad tyckte du om den?
Nants whiskybarer i Australien och Kuala Lumpur har whiskies från hela världen. Jag har dock ännu inte provat någon svensk whisky men nu är jag på jakt efter en!

Vilket är ditt mest minnesvärda ögonblick i din whiskykarriär?
Jag hade privilegiet att få ha whiskyauktoriteten Jim Murray som gäst på Nantgodset när vår American Oak bourbon single malt whisky förärades ”Liquid Gold” status. Det var kul och minnesvärt!

Den kanske mest spännande tiden är nu. Nant går från styrka till styrka, vi tredubblar vår whiskyproduktion, öppnar nya barer och ett hotell samt föder upp angus nötboskap.

Vilka tre personer skulle du bjuda in till en whiskyprovning, och varför? (levande eller döda).

- Hon uttalade det berömda citatet att ”Jag vill dö vid 150, med en cigarett i min ena hand och ett glas whisky i den andra” det har alltid fått mig att le. Hon växte också upp under en av de mest intressanta perioderna i modern historia och jag skulle älska att bara sitta och hänga med henne.

Sean Connery
- Han är en av de mest långlivade ikonerna för stil och häftighet, vem skulle inte vilja ta en drink med agent 007. Plus att han är skotte så han vet nog en bra whisky eller två.

- Också Winston levde under en av de intressantaste perioderna under 1900-talet och han älskade whisky och cigarrer. Även om han kunde vara en tjurig karl så var hans kvickheter legendariska.
